The rapid COVID antibody test is a diagnostic test that determines a previous infection. Unlike the antigen and PCR tests which show active coronavirus infections, the antibody test tracks the presence of antibodies. When your body has been exposed to a virus (through vaccination or a previous infection), it begins to make antibodies to fight off the attack. These antibodies help prepare and protect your body from reinfection or severe symptoms.

Antibodies are detected via a blood sample from patients who have previously been infected or vaccinated against the coronavirus. This diagnostic test shows the body’s efforts or preparedness to fight off a new COVID infection.

Since it takes your body up to three weeks to make antibodies, a COVID antibody test should not be used to detect a current infection. 

Patients who have been vaccinated or received a booster for COVID-19 may test positive on an antibody test. Additionally, antibody testing should not be used following COVID vaccination to determine immunity against the virus. The tool simply detects the presence of antibodies, not whether or not they will fully prevent an infection.
