How Does an RSV Test Work?

Our RSV tests are quick and easy, and results are posted within 15 minutes. When you get your RSV test, you will be asked to sit in a chair while a registered nurse or certified medical assistant prepares the nasal aspirate. A syringe will be carefully used to push a small amount of a sterile saline solution into your nose.

Afterwards, another device will apply gentle suction to your nose to collect the sample. Once the sample has been properly collected, it will be run to the lab for proper analysis. You can find your results on the Patient Test Result Portal.

Who Should Get a Respiratory Syncytial Virus Test?

RSV is a relatively common respiratory illness, and it typically goes away on its own. However, it has a higher chance of giving older adults and young children more severe infections and can lead to other illnesses, like bronchiolitis, if not treated properly.

Infants and adults over the age of 65 need to be closely monitored if they test positive for RSV. Some over-the-counter medications can help provide relief for breathing problems or fever.
